History of Puppets
Traditional favourite puppets of the last century were Pinocchio and Punch & Judy. Punch having evolved from Pulcinella, the popular puppet of the medieval Italian commedia dell'arte and later of the Elizabethan puppet theatre.
Puppets were used to tell Greek children the story of Odysseus's journey. In the Middle Ages puppets portrayed characters in slapstick quarrels while the Guignol puppets of France in the nineteenth century showed a new interest in the everyday life of workers. The shadow puppets of South East Asia, China and India told local children of folktales for hundreds of years.
